| The conservation of the genetic resources Solanaceae in the experimental garden in Nijmengen |
|
The Botanical and Experimental Garden of the Radboud University of Nijmegen pays special attention to the family of Solanaceae and maintains the most extensive ex situ plant collection of non-tuberous Solanaceae species in the world. The conservation of the genetic resources of the Solanaceae is of great importance, since many Solanaceae species provide for important sources of food, medicin and ornamental crops, but in addition several species have served well in pioneering biotechnology, genetic engineering and genetic analysis. The Botanical and Experimental Garden of the Radboud University of Nijmegen has opted for the conservation of Solanaceae species within the framework of the decentralized National Plant Collection of the Botanical Gardens in The Netherlands. Worldwide collaboration and/or exchange has been established, especially with international institutes with Solanaceae germplasm collections.
The extensive Solanaceae collection maintained the Botanical and Experimental Garden is well documented by passport data, illustrations, herbarium and bibliography. To make all this information on Solanaceae readily available to interested parties all this information is stored in databases which can be searched online.
